Safety & Etiquette
- Wear safety glasses and hearing protection
- Dress in appropriate clothing
- 100% natural fiber (cotton, leather, wool, linen, etc.)
- Closed toed shoes (no holes or mesh)
- Verify that the gas is off and all valves are closed before turning on the forge and before leaving
- Clean up after yourself - this means scale, spills, tools, etc.
- Do not leave oil on tongs or tongs in water or oily tongs in the water
- Shout HOT METAL when moving with hot metal
- Ask for consent before giving advice
Shop Rules
- Forges must be attended at all times while lit
- You must be approved by shop managers to use forges
- Only approved forges may be used (talk to a blacksmith manager to approve new forges)
- Only shop propane bottles may be used, NO PERSONAL PROPANE
- Fill out propane tracking sheet and donate for propane consumed
- The tools in the blacksmithing area are to stay in the blacksmithing area
- Hammers in the blacksmithing area are not for general use
- Clean area after use, including anvil faces (especially of flux!)
- Hot items are to be stored on cooling rack
- Tongs should be dried and returned to the rack
- Do not use harden tools on anvil faces (chisels, etc)
- Report any damaged or broken tools to shop managers (blacksmithing@tcmaker.org)
- Oil quenching may only be done by trained individuals
- Be excellent to one another
